About the Stone

Autumn Brown — often called an "autumn blend" — is one of the most popular warm-toned Indian sandstones in the UK. Its rich palette of light and dark browns, with occasional buff, red and grey, adds instant warmth and character to a patio, and pairs beautifully with both established and newly designed gardens.

Each slab is hand-split along the stone's natural bedding planes to achieve an authentic riven finish, then hand-dressed at the edges for that traditional charm. Calibrated to a nominal 22mm, it lays quickly and evenly. As a natural stone its water absorption sits in the typical sandstone range of roughly 1–3%, and it's frost-resistant and resilient to the British climate — standing up well to long-term outdoor exposure through repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

The riven texture provides reliable traction underfoot, which is why Autumn Brown is a safe, dependable choice for patios, paths and outdoor seating areas. Matching steps, copings and setts are available to complete the scheme.

Care & Maintenance

Autumn Brown is genuinely low-maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional washing keep the surface clean and presentable; keeping it clear of algae, moss and surface dirt also maintains grip underfoot. A quick jet-wash once or twice a year is usually all a UK patio needs.

Sealing is optional but recommended — a breathable impregnating sealer helps resist staining and moisture through wet winters, and it's especially worth doing in freezing regions to stop water seeping in. Use pH-neutral cleaners only; never acidic products, which permanently damage natural stone. Over time, Autumn Brown weathers to an even more characterful, natural finish.

Buyer Questions

Autumn Brown FAQs

Is Autumn Brown sandstone slippery when wet?

No. The naturally uneven riven surface has an R11 slip rating and gives reliable grip underfoot, even in wet weather — provided it's kept clear of algae and moss, which can reduce grip on any paving over time.

Is Autumn Brown frost-proof for the UK?

Yes. Autumn Brown is frost-resistant and resilient to the British climate, standing up well to repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Sealing is recommended in especially cold regions to prevent water ingress.

How much does a patio pack cover?

A standard mixed pack of 60 slabs (four sizes, calibrated 22mm) covers approximately 18.5 m² based on a 10–12mm joint. Allow around 10% extra for cuts and spares.

Does Autumn Brown need sealing?

Sealing is optional but recommended for UK outdoor use. A breathable impregnating sealer resists staining and moisture; clean only with pH-neutral products, never acidic cleaners.

Can I use it for a driveway?

Autumn Brown is primarily a patio and path stone. For driveways, use the correct thickness and sub-base and consult us on suitability — riven setts are often a better driveway choice for vehicle loads.
