Rippon Buff is a riven Indian sandstone in a warm blend of buff, cream, gold and orange, with occasional green and lilac tones running through it. It is one of the most popular buff Indian sandstones in the UK, and is also sold as Sunset Buff, Buff Rippon, Rippon Indian sandstone or simply buff Indian stone.
Every slab is different. A sandy-buff base carries waves of orange, crimson and lavender, so a finished buff sandstone patio never looks repetitive. The colours deepen when the stone is wet — the gallery above shows the same courtyard dry and freshly washed.
The lightly riven, natural-cleft face and hand-dressed edges suit traditional gardens, and it is often chosen as a less expensive alternative to Yorkstone. It is a hard-wearing paving stone made for outdoor use, and the textured riven face gives more grip underfoot than sawn or honed buff sandstone paving slabs. Day-to-day care is a sweep and a wash with mild soapy water; sealing helps keep the colours at their best.

Our standard mixed patio pack holds 60 calibrated 22mm slabs covering about 18.5 m²: 16 at 900 × 600 mm, 16 at 600 × 600 mm, 16 at 600 × 290 mm (or 600 × 300 mm) and 12 at 290 × 290 mm, in a crate of about 750 kg. Riven surface is created when the stone is split along its natural layers, providing a truly authentic finish. This process leaves beautiful variations in texture throughout the surface of each slab — one of the main appeals of riven sandstone paving. Each riven slab features hand-dressed edges which add to the natural, organic look and create a timeless appeal for any traditional design. This style is suited to traditional settings and is a great alternative to Yorkstone, whilst also being less expensive.
Sawn sandstone is sawn straight off the block rather than being split naturally. The sawn slabs are cut down to size and the top surface is honed, creating a smooth finish with a slight sheen. Our smooth sandstone paving is sawn on all 6 sides, meaning the 4 edges are also straight and machine-cut to complete the contemporary look. Sawn paving offers an entirely different appeal to riven, with more pronounced patterns and colours across the surface, and a natural level of slip resistance when properly maintained.
