Kandla Grey is the most popular sandstone to come from India — a subtle but beautiful silver-grey stone with hints of light blue, hard-wearing and dense, ideal for paths and patios. Owing to its attractive finish and suitability for both indoor and outdoor environments, it has become one of the most widely used Indian sandstone paving slabs across the American, English and European markets.
Geologically it's a quartz-rich sandstone — around 80% quartz cemented with silica and calcite — which is exactly why it performs so well outdoors. Published test data for Kandla Grey puts its water absorption at roughly 1.3% and its open porosity near 3%, closer to granite than to typical soft sandstones, giving it strong resistance to frost, salt and freeze-thaw weathering. It's quarried across the Budhpura, Bundi and Bhilwara belt of Rajasthan, and is also known in the trade as Bhilwara Grey, Budhpura Grey, Pearl Grey and Silver Grey.
A hand-cut stone with a traditional riven finish, it's rough and textured with slight variations in thickness that add to its character. Beyond being a cost-efficient paving solution, it handles inclement weather in extremely hot and cold countries with ease. You will also see it sold as Kendal Grey or Kandla Gray, as Kandla Indian sandstone, or simply as grey Indian sandstone — all the same stone. Shade varies naturally from light grey to deeper silver-grey between lots, which is why we recommend a sample before you order. Its density also makes it a good choice for indoor grey sandstone floor tiles in sawn or honed finishes.
The standard project pack totals 60 slabs across 4 sizes, calibrated to a 22mm base — covering approximately 18.5 m² per pack. Custom thicknesses (18/22/25/30mm), single sizes such as 900 × 600 mm (600 × 900) and cut-to-size slabs are available on request.
Beyond paving slabs, we cut Kandla Grey into 40mm coping stones (400 mm and 150 mm wide, in 900 and 1200 mm lengths) for garden and pool walls, sandstone blocks for walling and landscaping, and fireplace hearths — so the patio, its walls and the hearth indoors can all be one grey sandstone.

Kandla Grey is refreshingly low-maintenance for UK gardens. For routine care, sweep with a soft broom and wash occasionally with a mild, pH-neutral detergent — never acidic or harsh chemical cleaners, which can damage natural stone. This is usually all it takes to keep a patio looking its best year-round.
Sealing is optional but recommended for outdoor use in the British climate. A quality breathable, impregnating sealer helps the stone resist staining, efflorescence and organic growth (algae and moss) through wet winters, while still letting the stone breathe. Reseal every few years depending on exposure. Over time, unsealed Kandla Grey develops a charming weathered patina that many homeowners prefer.

Riven Kandla Grey has a naturally textured, grainy surface that gives good grip underfoot, even when wet. We have not published an independent slip test for it, but the riven face grips far better than sawn or honed finishes, which is why it's popular for patios, pool surrounds and pathways.

Our Kandla Grey is calibrated and available in 18mm, 22mm, 25mm and 30mm. 22mm is standard for garden patios; 30mm or more is recommended for driveways and vehicle traffic.
A standard mixed project pack covers approximately 18.5 m² across four sizes (900×600, 600×600, 600×290, 290×290mm). Single sizes and cut-to-size are available to order.
Depending on the market and finish, it's also sold as Pearl Grey, Dove Grey, Siberian Grey, Bhilwara Grey, Budhpura Grey and Silver Grey. The thermal-finished version is sometimes called Oakville Thermal Bluestone. In the UK it is also sold as Kendal Grey, and in the US it is usually spelt Kandla Gray.
Calibrated paving is a value-added finish, so allow about 30 days from order to FOB Mundra, then about 4 weeks from port to a UK yard.
