Most suppliers of black basalt stone offer one or two finishes. We manufacture twelve, from raw rockface cladding to a mirror-polished floor — every one processed in our own units, so a single order can mix finishes without a colour shift between them.
Choose a Finish
Flamed for external paving where grip matters, leather (also sold as lapatro, leatherite or satin) for interior floors, rockface for raw cladding panels, mirror polish for lobbies and vanity tops. Every finish is cut and processed in-house, so lead times and colour stay consistent whichever you specify.
Black basalt changes character completely with the finish applied to it. These are our own production and project photographs — not stock images — grouped so you can compare like with like before requesting samples.
Leather, Lapatro, Leatherite and Satin are four trade names for the same finish — a soft, low-sheen surface with a faint texture underfoot. It reads darker and richer than honed basalt without the glare of a mirror polish, which is why specifiers reach for it on interior floors, feature walls and countertops. Available on both tiles and full gangsaw slabs.
Split by hand along the stone's natural fracture, rockface cladding gives a deep shadow line that no machined texture reproduces. Chiselled edges sharpen the joint further. Supplied in strip sizes such as 4×1 and 6×12 for elevations, boundary walls, plinths and fireplace surrounds — the workhorse format for basalt building stone.
Basalt cobblestone is the densest paving we make. Hand-cut cobbles keep six split faces and an irregular edge for a traditional look; tumbled rectangular setts give a softer, aged profile for driveways and courtyards. Common cube sizes are 100×100, 100×200 and 50×50mm, cut to your specification.
A high-temperature flame spalls the surface open into a coarse, grippy texture — the standard specification for external paving, pool surrounds and steps where slip resistance matters. Brushing afterwards knocks back the roughness slightly and deepens the black. Flamed basalt is our highest-volume export finish.
Four machine textures, each cut to a different depth. Bushhammered gives an even pitted surface with good grip. Rustic keeps a broken, weathered face. Rippled runs parallel grooves across the slab for a linear shadow. Cotton is the softest of the four — a fine matte tooth that stays comfortable barefoot.
Mirror polish takes the stone to a full reflective gloss, showing the fine even grain that separates good basalt from open, vesicular lava rock. Honed stops at a flat matte; Refined sits between the two with a gentle lustre. All three suit interior floors, lobbies, stair treads and vanity tops.
Not all basalt is jet black. Straight off the gangsaw the stone can read as a dark grey basalt with a fine even tone — a colour many architects prefer to a full black for large floor areas, because it hides dust and shows less footfall. Sawn slabs are also the starting point for every other finish on this page.
Everything begins with the raw block. We cut and process in-house rather than buying finished stone from a trader, which is how colour and thickness stay consistent across a full container order. Large basalt stones and rough blocks can also be supplied uncut for boulders, gabion fill and landscape features.

About the Stone
Basalt is a natural volcanic stone — molten lava that cooled fast enough to lock into a dense, fine, even grain. That is why it is sold under so many names: black volcanic stone, black lava stone, lava black, volcano black stone, and simply basalt black. They all describe the same material.
The colour runs from a deep jet black through to a dark grey basalt, depending on the seam and the finish applied. Polished, it reads almost pure black; flamed or bushhammered, it lightens to charcoal. Unlike the porous, bubbled lava rock sold for gardens and aquariums, dimensional basalt of this kind is tight-grained and low-porosity, which is what makes it viable as flooring, cladding and paving.
We have manufactured natural stone since 1996 across four units, cutting from raw block to finished slab in-house. For a buyer that means no importer and no merchant in between — and colour consistency across a full container, because every piece passes through the same line.

Basalt is quarried in India across the Deccan region — principally Maharashtra, and also Jharkhand, West Bengal and Rajasthan. The Deccan Traps are one of the largest volcanic formations on earth, laid down by successive lava flows, and they are the reason India is a serious source of black basalt stone rather than a marginal one.
Seams differ. Some yield the jet black stone specified for polished interiors; others run to a dark grey basalt better suited to large external areas. Because we buy raw block and process it ourselves, we can hold a single tone across an order instead of blending whatever a trader has in the yard that month.

Crushed black basalt is graded to the common decorative sizes — 6mm, 10mm, 14mm and 20mm — for gravel, driveways and drainage, with larger gabion stone and basalt sand also available. Sizes and tolerances are confirmed on the order acknowledgement before production begins.
Basalt is one of the densest natural stones in commercial use. The figures below are the characteristics European specifiers ask for, each shown against the test method it is measured by.

They are not a Declaration of Performance, and freeze/thaw resistance, slip resistance and abrasion resistance are not published here. A note on names buyers sometimes compare us against: Napa basalt and Hawaiian black lava are quarried locally in California and Hawaii and are not the same material — the Californian stone is much lighter in tone and Hawaiian lava rock is porous rather than dense. Ask for samples and judge side by side.
