About the Stone
Natural pebbles are smooth, rounded stones that have been tumbled — by rivers over centuries, or by machine to accelerate the same effect. They are among the most versatile landscape materials there is: ground cover, decorative borders, dry creek beds, planter boxes, water features, and the gaps between stepping stones.
The practical case for pebbles is not just how they look. They suppress weeds, hold moisture in the soil beneath, prevent erosion on slopes and around downpipes, and improve drainage in places where planting would simply drown. In a water-wise garden they do the job mulch does, without rotting down and needing replacing every second year.
They are sold by weight rather than by area, which catches people out. Coverage depends entirely on depth: at a typical 50mm you will need roughly 90–100 kg per square metre. Smooth pebbles pack a little more tightly than angular gravel, so they run about 10–12% heavier per square metre than a chipping of the same size. Depth decides everything — including cost. 25mm around pots and borders. 40mm on walking paths. 75mm on a driveway. 100mm if you want genuine ground cover and weed suppression. Getting this wrong is the difference between a job that works and one that needs topping up in a year, and it changes your tonnage by a factor of four.
Use a weed membrane on soft soil. Pebbles sink. On soft ground, a membrane and a compacted base stop them disappearing into the soil over two winters — which is both a coverage problem and a weed problem, because once pebbles sink, soil comes up through them and weeds follow.
Larger pebbles need more depth. A 50mm bed of 10mm pebbles covers well. A 50mm bed of 50mm pebbles is a single layer with gaps you can see the membrane through. As a rule: small pebbles around 30mm depth, larger pebbles 50–70mm.
Order by weight, not optimism. Measure length × width × depth, work out the volume, then convert. Add 10%. Running short on a pebble job means a second delivery charge for a fraction of a tonne.

Care & Maintenance
Pebbles ask almost nothing. Rake them level occasionally and pick out leaves before they break down into the bed — organic matter sitting in a pebble bed is what lets weeds establish, not the pebbles themselves.
Every few years a wash with clean water restores the colour, particularly on polished grades where dust dulls the shine. If the bed has thinned, top up rather than replacing: pebbles do not degrade, they just migrate and sink.
