About the Stone

Mint Smooth Sandstone — also known as Mint Fossil Honed, Yellow Mint Sawn or Gwalior Mint — is the sawn and honed version of Fossil Mint. It is a beautiful natural sandstone with a mixture of beige, yellow, cream and swirl colours over a base of light beige to ivory. With its natural tones and shades, Mint paving blends in with almost any surrounding, which is precisely its appeal.

It is the palest stone in our sawn range and the one with the most restrained variation. Indian sandstones are known for their variation and buyers across the UK and Europe love that character — but Mint Smooth is the quieter option: light tone slabs with limited variation, a calm backdrop that makes a small garden read larger and lets planting or furniture take the lead.

The top surface is honed, the edges are sawn, and the bottom is calibrated. That last point matters more than it sounds: good quality slabs are always calibrated, and if you buy from a supplier who is not very good, broken slabs are a real possibility. When buying Fossil Mint smooth sandstone, always keep an eye on who your supplier is. We manufacture it at our Kota units and in nearby Gwalior, and export it to Canada, the USA, Germany, Sweden and beyond.

Sealing sawn stone — read this first

Sawn paving behaves differently to riven. A few honest notes that will save you trouble later.

Seal before you lay it. This is the single most important thing with any sawn stone. Sawing opens up the stone’s pores far more than natural splitting does, so Mint Smooth will take a stain quickly if it goes down bare. Seal all six sides — top, bottom and edges — with a quality impregnating natural stone sealer before installation, not after.

Use an SBR bond underneath. Paint neat SBR onto the underside and let it dry fully before laying. It creates a barrier between the sand-cement mix and the slab, which is what prevents the patchy dark staining that shows up weeks later and cannot be undone.

Pale stone shows more. Mint Smooth is the lightest stone we sell, and light stone shows staining more readily than dark. That is not a fault in the stone — it is physics. It simply means the sealing step matters more here than on any other product in the range. Seal it properly and it stays ivory; skip it and you will see every mark.

Sawn edges are sharper — handle with care. Unlike hand-dressed riven edges, machine-sawn edges are crisp and square. That is what gives sawn paving its clean contemporary line, but it also means the arrises can chip if slabs are dragged or knocked. Lift, don’t slide.

Order 10% extra. Standard for any natural stone — it covers cuts, breakage and any undercounted measurement.

Care & Maintenance

Sweep with a soft broom and wash occasionally with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never use acidic cleaners — they cause permanent, irreparable damage to natural stone.

Due to the porous nature of sawn sandstone, these slabs hold stains fast if a good sealer is not used — and being the palest stone in our range, Mint Smooth shows marks more readily than any other. Always use a sealer. Done properly, it will not only keep the stone from staining but will enhance its natural colour over time and for years to come.

Buyer Questions

Mint Smooth FAQs

What is the difference between Fossil Mint riven and Mint Smooth?

Same stone family, different process. Riven Fossil Mint is hand-split, textured, and often shows fossil impressions on the surface. Mint Smooth is sawn and honed flat — smoother, paler-reading, more uniform, and better suited to contemporary schemes and indoor use.

Why does Mint Smooth need sealing more than other stones?

Two reasons compound. Sawn paving is more porous at the cut face than riven, and Mint is the palest stone in our range — light surfaces show staining far more readily than dark ones. Sealing all six sides before laying is not optional here; it is the difference between an ivory patio and a marked one.

Is Mint Smooth slippery when wet?

Sawn and honed sandstone has a natural level of slip resistance and is not known to be slippery when wet when properly maintained. Riven surfaces grip better, so for pool surrounds consider riven Fossil Mint instead.

What other names is Mint Smooth known by?

Mint Fossil Honed, Yellow Mint Sawn, Mint Sawn Honed, Fossil Mint Smooth and Gwalior Mint Sandstone. They all refer to the same sawn and honed pale sandstone.

Will I get fossils in Mint Smooth?

Occasionally, but far less visibly than in riven Fossil Mint. Honing cuts through the surface layer where fossil impressions sit, so the sawn version reads much more uniformly. If the fossil detail is what you want, choose riven Fossil Mint.

How do I know I am getting good quality Mint Smooth?

Check that the slabs are calibrated. Good quality Mint Smooth is always calibrated on the bottom — if a supplier is not calibrating properly, broken slabs on arrival become a real possibility. We calibrate every slab at our Kota units and hand-inspect for thickness consistency.
