About the Stone
Raj Green Sawn Honed is the smooth version of our best-selling Raj Green. Both come out of the same quarry near Rajpura village, close to Kota — but the production process makes them totally different products. Where riven Raj Green is hand-split for texture, the sawn version is cut straight off the block and honed: sanded down until the surface is smooth, flat and even, with a slight sheen.
The colour is what draws people to it. Raj Green is, as the name suggests, a mix of greens and gentle brown colours, with occasional purplish tones running through the blend that add to the rich, traditional look of the stone. Honing brings those tones forward — patterns and colours are noticeably more pronounced across a sawn surface than a riven one. In UK terms it reads as grey-green with beige and occasional lilac: a cool neutral that works as comfortably on a period property as on a new build.
Its real claim is as the natural alternative to York Stone. Raj Green paving slabs look strikingly like the traditional Yorkstone used across Britain for centuries, but at a fraction of the cost — which is exactly why they became the first choice for so many homeowners and landscapers. Hard-wearing, durable and designed for outdoor use, it stands up to harsh weather and retains its grip underfoot for decades.
Standard mixed packs cover approximately 18.5 m², calibrated to 22mm. Also available in the 600 series, 560 series and French pattern layouts, plus matching cobbles.
Sawn paving behaves differently to riven. A few honest notes that will save you trouble later.
Seal before you lay it. This is the single most important thing with any sawn stone. Sawing opens up the stone’s pores far more than natural splitting does, so Raj Green Smooth will take a stain quickly if it goes down bare. Seal all six sides — top, bottom and edges — with a quality impregnating natural stone sealer before installation, not after.
Use an SBR bond underneath. Paint neat SBR onto the underside and let it dry fully before laying. It creates a barrier between the sand-cement mix and the slab, which is what prevents the patchy dark staining that shows up weeks later and cannot be undone.
Sawn edges are sharper — handle with care. Unlike hand-dressed riven edges, machine-sawn edges are crisp and square. That is what gives sawn paving its clean contemporary line, but it also means the arrises can chip if slabs are dragged or knocked. Lift, don’t slide.

Care & Maintenance
Sweep with a soft broom and wash occasionally with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never use acidic cleaners on Raj Green Smooth — or any natural stone — as they cause permanent, irreparable damage to both the colour and the structure of the surface.
Because it is sawn, keep on top of spills rather than letting them sit; a honed surface shows water marking more readily than a riven one. Reseal every two to four years depending on exposure. Done properly, a good sealer does more than protect — it deepens the natural colour and keeps it reading rich for years.
Yes — identical stone, from the same quarry near Rajpura village. The difference is entirely in production: riven is hand-split along natural layers for a textured traditional surface; sawn is cut off the block and honed flat for a smooth contemporary one. Sawn shows the greens, browns and purples far more vividly.
It is the classic one. Raj Green paving looks remarkably like the traditional Yorkstone used across Britain for centuries — warm greens and gentle bronzes — but costs a fraction of the price. That combination is why it became one of the best-selling Indian sandstones in the UK.
Sawn and honed sandstone has a natural level of slip resistance and is not known to be slippery when wet if properly maintained. Riven grips better, so for pool surrounds or sloped areas we would specify riven Raj Green instead.
Yes — before laying. Sawn paving is markedly more porous at the cut face than riven and will stain quickly if laid bare. Seal all six sides with an impregnating stone sealer and use an SBR bond on the underside against sand-cement staining.

It was originally quarried at a village near Kota called Rajpura. Rather than say Rajpura Green Sandstone, exporters and importers shortened it to Raj Green — and the name stuck.
