About the Stone
Modak — sold in some markets as Terracotta sandstone — is a warm pink stone with honey and rose-red tones and darker pink swirls across the face. It takes its name from the Modak belt in Kota district, Rajasthan, a short drive from our own works, with further reserves across the border in Madhya Pradesh.
The colour is mineral. It comes from iron oxide within the sand grains rather than from any surface treatment, so it holds its warmth outdoors year after year. Modak is dense and hard-wearing, naturally slip-resistant with a riven face, and frost-resistant — which is why it is specified across Northern Europe as readily as in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern schemes, where the warm tone suits a stronger light.
It is one of the most versatile stones we cut. Beyond riven and sawn paving, Modak is worked into cobbles and setts, pool coping, steps and risers, palisades, stepping stones, circles and wall cladding — so a whole scheme can be specified in a single stone.
The standard mixed patio pack holds 60 slabs across 4 sizes, calibrated to 22mm — roughly 18.5 m² at a 10–12mm joint. Cobbles, coping, steps and cladding are cut to order.
Care & Maintenance
Modak asks very little. Sweep it, wash it occasionally, and keep it clear of algae and moss so the surface stays clean and grippy. The pink deepens towards terracotta when the stone is wet, so expect the patio to change character after rain — that shift is part of the stone, not a fault.
A breathable impregnating sealer is recommended, particularly around pools and dining areas where staining is likely. Sealing also holds the colour closer to its wet, deeper tone. For chlorinated and especially salt-water pools, seal the stone and rinse the deck down regularly. Use pH-neutral cleaners only — acidic products permanently damage natural stone.

No. The colour comes from iron oxide inside the stone rather than from a surface treatment, so it is stable outdoors. Like any natural stone the face weathers slightly over the first year or two and then settles.
Yes — riven and tumbled Modak are both used for pool decks, with matching coping cut from the same stone. Seal it with a breathable impregnating sealer, and for chlorinated or salt-water pools rinse the deck down regularly to keep salts off the surface.

Agra Red is a deeper, more uniform red sandstone; Mandana is a harder, naturally acid-resistant red stone from the same district. Modak is the lightest and warmest of the three — pink and terracotta rather than red — and is the usual choice when a scheme needs warmth without weight.
