About the Stone
Sagar Black Sandstone is a rare and valuable sandstone, available from only a very limited number of quarries in India. Mainly a charcoal colour, it is interspersed with ochre-yellow tones which add to its variation and create a traditional, rich paving. It is very popular across Europe on large landscaping projects, and is the preferred exterior cladding for sea-shore buildings thanks to its saline resistance.
Unlike the Rajasthan stones in our range, Sagar Black is quarried in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, in central India. It is known in the trade by several names — Black Sagar, Saugor Black, Kalahari Black, and simply Black Indian Sandstone. For UK buyers, its closest reference point is reclaimed Yorkstone: it delivers that same weathered, traditional charcoal character at a fraction of the cost.
The stone's physical properties are excellent — low porosity, low water absorption, high compressive and flexural strength, and strong resistance to weathering and saline water. That combination makes it genuinely suitable for freezing climates, which is why it performs so reliably through British winters.
We'd rather explain the price than pretend it isn't there. Three real reasons, direct from the people who process it.
1. It splits thick. When natural cleft black sandstone is split, it separates into thicker slabs than other riven Indian sandstones. That means significantly more calibration work is needed to bring each slab down to a consistent 22mm.
2. It breaks more. During that heavier calibration, black sandstone suffers noticeably more breakage than lighter stones. Lost material is lost margin — and it goes into the price.
3. It travels before it ships. Sagar is a remote district. There is no processing capacity nearby, so every block is transported to our units in Kota for sawing, calibrating and tumbling before it's export-ready. That inland freight is real cost, added before the container is even packed.
The upside: what you get is a genuinely rare stone with a depth of colour no light sandstone can imitate — and considerably cheaper than the reclaimed Yorkstone it resembles.
The standard project pack totals 60 slabs across 4 sizes, calibrated to a 22mm base — covering approximately 18.5 m² per pack. Cobbles, thick steps, bullnose steps and walling also available.

Care & Maintenance
Sweep with a soft broom and wash with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never use acidic cleaners on natural stone — they cause permanent, irreparable damage to both colour and structure.
For Sagar Black we do recommend sealing, particularly for indoor flooring, where a water-repellent sealer should be applied before use. Outdoors, a breathable impregnating sealer helps the charcoal tone stay deep and resist organic growth through wet British winters. Like all natural sandstone, it will soften and weather gently over decades — many buyers consider that part of its appeal.

No. The riven surface is naturally textured with an R11 slip rating, giving reliable grip underfoot even when wet — suitable for patios, paths and pool surrounds.
We recommend it. For indoor flooring, apply a water-repellent sealer before use. Outdoors, a breathable impregnating sealer helps maintain the depth of the charcoal colour and resists organic growth. Always avoid acidic cleaners.
